
We know the exact year Norse sailors were cutting timber in North America: AD 1021. Not “around the eleventh century”, not a range with a hundred-year margin — a single calendar year, fixed by a blast of cosmic radiation that struck the Earth in 993 and left an identical fingerprint in tree rings across the planet. It is the most precise date in Viking Age archaeology, and it is worth understanding how it was obtained.

The 993 event: a cosmic timestamp in every tree on Earth
In 2012 the Japanese researcher Fusa Miyake found something odd in Japanese cedar: a sharp jump in radiocarbon between the rings for AD 774 and 775, far too abrupt for ordinary atmospheric variation. The spike showed up in trees on other continents in exactly the same year. A second, smaller one was then identified at 993. These are now called Miyake events, and the leading explanation is an extreme burst of solar energetic particles — a solar storm well beyond anything recorded in modern times.
For archaeology that is a gift. Standard radiocarbon dating gives you a probability range, often a century wide, because atmospheric carbon-14 drifts. A Miyake event gives you a single ring that can be identified in any well-preserved piece of wood in the world. Find that ring, count outward to the bark, and you have the year the tree died — to the year.
Four logs, more than a hundred rings, one answer
That is exactly what Margot Kuitems and Michael Dee of the University of Groningen did with wood from L’Anse aux Meadows. They worked with four pieces of fir and juniper that still had their bark edge — essential, because the bark edge is the final year of growth. In each one they located the 993 radiocarbon spike, then counted the rings between that marker and the outermost ring.
Every sample gave the same answer: the trees were cut in 1021. And the cut surfaces mattered as much as the rings. The wood had been worked with metal blades, and metal tools of that kind were not in use among the Indigenous peoples of Newfoundland at the time. Norse hands did the cutting.

What 1021 proves — and what it does not
It proves Europeans were in the Americas by 1021, four and a half centuries before Columbus. That is the headline, and it is solid.
What it does not prove is that 1021 was the first year. It is a fixed point inside an occupation whose beginning and end are still fuzzy: the Norse could have arrived earlier and stayed later. The site itself looks less like a colony than a base — a handful of turf halls and a smithy, used briefly, probably as a repair station and staging post for voyages further on.
There is one detail that quietly widens the map. Excavators at L’Anse aux Meadows recovered butternuts — the fruit of a walnut species that does not grow in Newfoundland, and did not then. Someone in that camp had been somewhere further south, in the Gulf of St Lawrence region or beyond, and brought them back.
What the sagas said first
The archaeology arrived second. Two Icelandic sagas, the Grœnlendinga saga (Saga of the Greenlanders) and Eiríks saga rauða (Saga of Erik the Red), describe voyages west from Greenland to lands called Helluland, Markland and Vinland, and name the people who made them: Bjarni Herjólfsson, blown off course and sighting land without setting foot on it; Leif Erikson, who went back to look properly; Thorfinn Karlsefni and Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir, who attempted an actual settlement. They also record trade and then violence with people the Norse called skrælingar, and a retreat.
Those texts were written down two centuries or more after the events, and for a long time the voyages were treated as literature. Then in 1960 Helge Ingstad and the archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad located Norse turf buildings at the northern tip of Newfoundland — the sagas had been describing something real. The same trick is re-dating the rest of the Viking Age
Cosmic-ray dating is not a one-off. The 775 event has been used on waterlogged timber from Ribe in Denmark to pin down when that trading town’s workshops really got going, which bears directly on when the Viking Age began — and hints that Scandinavian traders were building networks before the raids that usually open the story. Ship burials such as Herlaugshaugen in Norway have been pushed earlier by precise dating of their own.
One honest caveat: recent tree-ring work has shown that trees do not all record a radiocarbon spike in precisely the same ring. Growing season, stored sugars from previous years and local conditions can smear the signal across two or three rings. It does not undo the L’Anse aux Meadows result, which rested on multiple samples agreeing, but it does mean the method needs care rather than blind trust — which is how good dating has always worked.
